Learn to dance Salsa – the most popular dance in the Latin Dances family

With Salsa being the most popular dance of the Latin dances family it’s easy to find like-minded dancers all over the world, even in the most remote places.

Who would have thought that Salsa dancing is so popular on Bali? And yet there are many different locations around the island where you can learn and practice your skills.

Salsa On1, On2, Cuban Salsa, Rueda de Casino… What are they talking about?

Although originating from Cuba as a fusion of a variety of Afro-Caribbean and Latin dances, Salsa today knows many more different styles than the Cuban style only. Born on the streets Salsa quickly spread around the world and morphed into different styles.

You can dance Salsa Cuban style, LA style, New York style, Puerto Rican style, Colombian/Cali style and even in a circle, known as Rueda de Casino. The term Salsa as a description for the dance is said to have originated in New York in the 1970s.

On1 or On2 describes on which count the dancers step forward and backward. LA Style starts on the count of one (“on1”), whereas New York style starts “on2”, despite both styles being so-called linear styles.

At the linear styles the dancers stay in one line as opposed to non-linear styles, such as Cuban style where the movement is mostly circular.
